Writing in the Age of Algorithms: How to Stay Human
As a content writer in the digital world, it’s hard to ignore the growing influence of algorithms and AI. From SEO optimisation to AI-generated articles, it sometimes feels like we’re writing more for machines than for people.
But here’s the truth I keep coming back to: connection beats clicks.
Yes, I care about rankings and reach. I use keywords, study analytics, and get help from AI tools to brainstorm. But at the end of the day, I’m not writing for robots — I’m writing for real people, with real problems, questions, and emotions.
Algorithms might help content get seen. But only humanity makes it worth reading.
So how do I stay grounded in the age of automation?
1. I write like I’m talking to a friend.
If it doesn’t sound natural out loud, it probably won’t resonate online. I keep my tone conversational and my language clear.
2. I focus on stories.
Data can inform. AI can summarize. But stories? Stories move people — and that’s where human writers shine.
3. I use AI as a tool, not a voice.
I’ll use it to generate ideas or overcome writer’s block, but the message, tone, and emotion always come from me.
4. I remember why I write.
Not for the algorithm, not for the clicks — but to help, inspire, or connect. That’s what makes good writing great.
We live in a digital world, but our job as writers is to be the human part of it. In the race to optimise, don’t forget to empathise.
Because even in the age of algorithms, heart still matters.
About Me
After 10+ years building websites, I realised my favorite part of the process wasn’t just the code, it was the storytelling behind the design, the copy that connects, and the way words shape digital experiences.
